Placebo基本来自英国,乐队在1994年开始成形,当时Stefan Olsdal和Brian Molko在地下铁车站中相遇,后来Stefan看见Brian弹吉他,之后便决定两人组成乐队"Ashtray Heart". 当时虽然Steven Hewitt是在乐队中打鼓,但因合约关系并未能正式加入乐队,之后Stefan介绍Robert Schultzberg给Brian,于是三人组成最初的Placebo,直至1996年,Steven Hewitt正式加入Placebo,取代了Robert Schultzberg的位置,组成现在的三人组合Placebo !在和the Sex Pistols、Weezer一道进行巡回演出后，Placebo推出了首张专辑《Placebo》，其中单曲“Nancy Boy”成为了英国排行榜的第五位，乐队还在庆祝著名摇滚艺人David Bowie500岁生日时演出了该曲。
